Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
“I can’t do it”. That was my reply to my friend Doug who asked me to volunteer on one of our church committees’ several years ago. He said, “why not”? I didn’t want to tell him why because I was ashamed of something no one else in the church knew about me. After a very, very long pause I finally fessed up and confessed, “I can’t serve on the stewardship committee because I am not giving anything to the church. Doug knew I had recently taken a significant pay cut in the middle of a gut-wrenching and life-changing event. And yet, he gave me some very simple and challenging advice in the form of four simple words. He raised his right hand and extended one finger at a time as he said, “1-start, 2-giving, 3-trust, 4-God”.
I thought to myself, you try living with this paycheck, these bills and still pledge to church! And yet the little voice in my head kept saying, ‘do I really trust God?’. Does the God who came to save me from an abundance of sin still love me enough to provide for me when the numbers just don’t make sense? It took another week of wrestling with Doug’s challenge before I finally submitted to God’s encouragement to leap forward in faith-filled giving.
I later came to know and love the words of Malachi 3:10 where it says, “…put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, and see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need”.
For the last few weeks in church we have heard story after story of people in scripture who have trusted God even when the timing or situation just didn’t make sense. And now it’s your turn. Will you trust God by growing one or more steps in your giving?
Linked below is your opportunity to trust God in the form of a pledge card and some charts to help you find both your current giving and the next steps for growing in the grace of giving. Pray for the Lord to guide your response. Then, simply fill out the yellow pledge card and return it to St John or bring it to church and place it in the offering on Sunday, June 25. Your response is confidential and will not be seen by any of your fellow church members.
And may the Lord bless you for your faithfulness in His many and unexpected ways.
With confidence in Christ,
